OUR STORY

Meghalaya is still way behind the country in all fields of development and especially healthcare. In this scenario of underdevelopment the eye care service is also greatly underdeveloped and most of the areas are under-served. There is an acute need for external support to ensure quality eye care which is both equitable and affordable. So with such a high demand convergence is required of all stakeholders to join hands and achieve the common goal of eliminating avoidable blindness.

The Society for Promotion of Eye Care and Sight is a result of a movement in the city of Shillong by individuals belonging to different educational, professional and religious backgrounds concerned with the plight of the stiffening eye patients and visually impaired patients. After several planning sessions and meetings, the constitution of the Society containing the memorandum was passed and the Society was registered on 17th August 1992.

Since 2009, Bansara Eye Care Hospital conducted and supported all the charitable eye care activities under the society and SPECS functions as the charitable wing of Bansara Eye Care Hospital. With most employees of Bansara Eye Care Hospital working in Society for Promotion of Eye Care and Sight voluntarily doing their bit and contributing to the community.

Over the years from conducting free eye camps, performing free high quality cataract surgeries, conducting school eye screening, supplementing governmental efforts in the state and working towards elimination of avoidable blindness in the state, SPECS has come a long way.
